Divers Find Bodies In Muddy River

Compiled From Wire Services

Divers groping through muddy waters found 10 more bodies Sunday, raising to 135 the death toll from Christmas Day floods that washed away entire squatter settlements.

“Bodies are still popping up on the river banks, but we’re concentrating on the river itself,” said police Inspector Jack Haskins. “The sniffer dogs are on the river and we’re giving divers the priority.”

Inoculated against typhoid, the divers are relying on their sense of touch to scour the Msunduze River, which is choked with silt and debris from the 2,000 dwellings unloosed by flash floods.
