Hotel Accuses Players

A hotel room rented by a Fresno State basketball player for a New Year’s Eve party with teammates was vandalized and stripped of furnishings, police said.

Starting point guard Dominick Young said he rented the suite in the San Joaquin Suite Hotel in Fresno on Sunday, but had nothing to do with the thefts of more than $600 in furnishings.

Housekeepers reported numerous items missing from the business hotel the next morning, including a coffee table, a microwave oven, a coffee maker, an iron, a clock radio, picture frames, a flower arrangement, several lamps and bedding.

They also said they found alcoholic beverage containers and hints some guests may have smoked marijuana, police said. Housekeepers said the carpet, soiled with vomit, required extensive cleaning.

For the second time in five years, a charitable foundation is suing Bay Meadows racetrack for allegedly cheating local charities out of at least $548,000 in state-mandated contributions.

The Bay Meadows Foundation, which distributes annual contributions by the San Mateo, Calif., track to more than 100 Peninsula charities, accuses the Bay Meadows Operating Co. of improperly subtracting its expenses from money earned on 15 total “charity race days” for 1992, 1993 and 1994.

Kenny Walker, a Kentucky All-American who went on to play in the NBA, was arrested and charged with assault for allegedly choking his wife. He was charged with the fourth-degree misdemeanor offense.

Heavyweight boxer Jo-el Scott pleaded innocent to a charge of punching a female acquaintance in the face on New Year’s Day. Scott, 24, was arraigned in the Albany, N.Y. City Court on one count of thirddegree assault.

A University of Nebraska basketball player was suspended from the team after being arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

Sgt. Ann Heermann said Chester B. Surles was arrested after he turned himself to police.
