Rangers 7, Canadiens 4 New York

Mark Messier reached another milestone and New York continued its hot play at home with a win over Montreal.

Messier, who scored his 500th goal earlier this season, had two goals and an assist to move past Bryan Trottier into sixth place on the NHL’s career scoring list with 1,427 points.

The Rangers got three goals and an assist from Ray Ferraro as they extended their home-ice unbeaten streak to 18 (15-0-3), the longest in 24 seasons at Madison Square Garden. They also had a 15-0-3 streak in 1971-72. The club record is 24 games, set in the 1970-71 season.

The Atlantic Division-leading Rangers, who began the night tied for the NHL’s overall points lead with Detroit, are 16-2-3 at home this season.

Glenn Healy, playing in place of injured Mike Richter, made 35 saves behind a Rangers defense that did not give the Canadiens many second shots. It was the second straight game missed by Richter, who will be out four weeks with a groin injury.
