Part Of 1-2 Punch, Clark Delivers Ko

GSL girls

Chelsea Clark knows if she delivers the baskets her Mead teammates will continue to deliver the ball.

Clark spent the holiday break reminding herself of that by playing pickup games against the guys and Wednesday night she delivered the knockout punch against Shadle Park.

The Panthers used the one-two, outside-inside combination of Stacy Clinesmith and Clark to hand the Highlanders their first Greater Spokane League loss, 69-42 at Shadle Park.

“Over the break I tried to play a lot of pickup games to get back in my game,” said Clark, a 6-foot-1 forward who has signed to play at Gonzaga University. “During the summer I played a lot of pickup games with the guys. It makes me play a lot more aggressive. I played good in the preseason but once we got in the GSL … I knew I was missing a lot of shots before. If I make them, I’ll keep getting the ball from Stacy. I have to keep going up strong.”

Clark scored a career-high 17 points by hitting eight of 12 shots and grabbed a game-high six rebounds as the Panthers (4-0, 7-1) had a 36-23 edge on the boards.

Clinesmith had 18 points, hitting four 3-pointers in the first half as Mead opened a 33-9 lead, holding the Highlanders (4-1, 8-2) to two of 16 shooting with 15 turnovers.

“They were real tenacious early,” Mead coach Jeanne Helfer said. “They put us back on our heels but I was real pleased with out composure in the second quarter and our defense. The other thing is we made the extra pass for the easy basket.”

Shadle Park was one of eight in each of the first two quarters and just five of 11 from the foul line in the first half.

“We only lost the second half by three,” Highlanders coach Linda Sheridan said. “We shot ourselves in the foot. They just don’t make as many mistakes as the rest of us young teams do.” Sophomore Emily Christensen led the Highlanders with 16 points, 13 in the second half.
