Mcclatchy’s Bid Meets Scrutiny

Compiled From Wire Services

Major league baseball is pressuring prospective Pirates buyer Kevin McClatchy to line up more money and settle a debt with the team’s former owners before ratifying the sale.

McClatchy has raised $57 million in cash to buy the Pirates, but major league lawyers are worried that McClatchy may not have sufficient money to run the club.

At Tampa, Fla., Laurie Liss, the mother of Gary Sheffield’s 2-year-old son, has filed a police complaint alleging the Florida Marlins outfielder threatened to kill her if he did not get to see his child.

At Denver, a doctor has recommended that Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Bret Saberhagen undergo a second operation on his right shoulder, which could sideline the two-time Cy Young Award winner for the 1996 season.

Left-hander Chuck Finley and the Angels agreed to a $12 million, three-year contract with a club option that could make the deal worth up to $18 million.

Lance Parrish signed as a minor-league free agent with the Pirates.
