Doghouse Discipline Does Trick For Bruins

Associated Press

NHL

Cam Neely and Kevin Stevens came out of the coach’s doghouse Saturday night to score a goal apiece in the Boston Bruins’ 5-2 victory over the Hartford Whalers at Boston.

Neely and Stevens dressed but sat on the bench for 65 minutes during the Bruins’ 4-4 tie in Toronto Wednesday as coach Steve Kasper sent a “wakeup call” to his team.

Neely started against the Whalers and scored the fifth Boston goal, his 20th of the season, at 16:20 of the second period. Stevens, used sparingly on a fourth line in the first period, scored at 15:11 of the second when he converted a third rebound after Clayton Beddoes and Marius Czerkawski had tries at the Hartford net.

Around the league

Doug Lidster of the New York Rangers will be sidelined indefinitely due to fractured facial bones near his right cheekbone, an injury caused by a slap shot that hit him in the face.

Lidster, a defenseman, was injured in the second period of New York’s 4-4 tie with the Washington Capitals on Friday night. He was examined by doctors Saturday and will be re-examined early next week.

Mark Messier, who was hit just above the right ankle by a slap shot, also is listed as day-to-day.

The New York Islanders will not trade disgruntled forward Kirk Muller unless he agrees to report to whatever team he is dealt to and to honor his contract, general manager Mike Milbury.

Muller hasn’t played since Nov. 11. Former general manager Don Maloney banished Muller the next day in the hopes of trading him, but when he didn’t get a deal done, Maloney was fired.

Milbury said interest in Muller is high.

“We’ve had a list of 15 teams who we’ve spoken to in the last two weeks,” Milbury said. “We’ve tried to look under every rock for a solution.”
