Travel The World, Help Others Through Global Volunteers

Nancy Slack Correspondent

For those who still haven’t decided how to spend your volunteer hours, it’s not too late to escape winter - and contribute to a goodwill program at the same time.

Opportunities for individuals and couples of all ages to assist with domestic and international human development projects are offered through Global Volunteers, a private non-profit organization established in Latin America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Jamaica, Tanzania and in the southern United States. All programs are for one, two or three weeks.

Volunteers need no previous teaching or construction experience, and pay program and travel costs ranging from $300 for one week in the U.S. to $1,795 plus airfare in Tanzania. Volunteers live and work with local people during the project.

In this country, volunteers are needed to help build homes or repair community buildings in the Mississippi Delta or Rio Grande Valley.

Opportunities abroad include working in the rain forest of Costa Rica, teaching English in Indonesia or Mexico or helping build a school dormitory in Tanzania. For a free schedule, contact Global Volunteers at 1-800-487-1074 or 375 E. Little Canada Road, St. Paul, Minn., 55117.

Inland Northwest leaders of schools, charitable organizations, church, government … will gather Jan. 19 for the Spokane Leadership Forum.

Recent studies about the Spokane community and the potential for community collaboration will be discussed.

Two national experts on community building, David Chrislip, senior associate of the National Civic League, and Daniel Kemmis, mayor of Missoula, will speak and conduct workshops at the forum in the Crescent Court.

Reservations are due by Jan. 10. Cost for the all-day event is $45; scholarships are available. Call 459-4116 to register.

Last week’s item about the Spokane Community College business department helping rebuild this area’s volunteer forces had incorrect phone numbers. For more information, call Norm Kilgore at 533-7347, or Sharon Niblock at 533-7342. The class is not limited to business students.
