Elizabeth Pierce Spokane

Service for Elizabeth V. Pierce, 93, was Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Private burial was at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Born in Ferdinand, Idaho, Mrs. Pierce died Dec. 30 at home.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and was a longtime Spokane resident.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Fred Pierce, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Spear of Spokane, and Dolores Miller of Atlanta; seven grandchildren 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Watts Spokane

Service for Elizabeth W. Watts, 87, will be at 10 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. There will be private burial at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Watts, who died Wednesday, was born in Endicott, Wash.

She had worked at a drug store in Endicott and was a 50-year Spokane resident.

She was a member of the Lutheran church. Her husband, Howard Watts, died in 1952.

Survivors include one brother, Ramon Litzenberger of Bellevue, Wash.; three sisters, Alma McGuire of Colfax, Wash., Eva Balldere of Medford, Ore., and Phoebe Lane of Otis Orchards.

John Tweedy Spokane

Service for John Robert Tweedy, 78, is planned for 4 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Fernan, Idaho, Mr. Tweedy died Tuesday. A 70-year Spokane resident, he was a longtime employee of the City of Spokane. He retired from the city Parks and Recreation Department in 1979. He was a World War II Army veteran.

Mr. Tweedy is survived by his wife of 59 years, Edna Tweedy; two sons, Robert Tweedy and Glenn Tweedy; one daughter, Pennela “Penny” Kalinoski; two brothers, Ray and Joe Tweedy; his step-mother, Mary Ann Tweedy; two half-brothers, Charles and Ronnie Tweedy; two half-sisters, Mable Strick and Marabelle Bisson; one step-sister, Marilyn Lystad; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Fern Stevens Colville, Wash.

Service for Fern L. Stevens, 78, is planned for 11 a.m. today at the Colville Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Graveside service will follow at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stevens, who died Wednesday, was born in Wellington, Utah.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Colville since 1945. Her husband, Gerald Stevens, died in 1984.

She is survived by four daughters, Geraldine Harmon of Chino, Calif., Carolyn Fosback of Kettle Falls, Wash., Marilyn Michael of Ridgefield, Wash., and Joan Gardner of Bakersfield, Calif.; three sons, Donald Stevens of Hillsboro, Ore., Gerald Stevens Jr. of Warden, Wash., and Robert Stevens of Spokane; three sisters, Geneva Jowell of Price, Utah, Margaret Reed of Salt Lake City, and Gora Pace of Price, Utah; 34 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.

Mary Edmunds Spokane

Memorial service for Mary Elizabeth Edmunds, 82, was Saturday at Canterbury Court.

Mrs. Edmunds died Thursday at home.

Born in Green Bush, Ga., she was a 51-year Spokane resident and was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Michael and George Edmunds; one daughter, Marilyn Rouvelas; two sisters, Irma Stephenson, and Melba Rowan; eight grandchildren.

Brian Puryear Spokane

Memorial service for Brian Puryear, 27, was held Tuesday, at Valley Fourth Memorial Church.

Mr. Puryear died Dec. 28.

He was a resident of Spokane and graduated from University High School in 1986.

He was an enthusiastic supporter of both the Gospel Films Ministries and the Goads Ministries. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brian Puryear Memorial, Box 141124, Spokane, WA 99214. All donations will be recorded and forwarded to these ministries.

Jacob Schmick Endicott, Wash.

Graveside service for Jacob Schmick, 105, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Endicott Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schmick, who died Wednesday, was born in Russia.

He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1892. His family lived in Starbuck, Wash., for seven years and then moved to Endicott.

Mr. Schmick was a farmer in Endicott until he retired in 1948.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

His wife, Mary died in 1965.

Survivors include one son, Jack Schmick; one daughter, Luella Allen, both of Endicott; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Elton Thompson Spokane

Service for Elton N. Thompson, 79, are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Ball & Dodd Funeral Home - North. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Thompson, who was born in Almira, Wash., died Thursday.

He graduated from Almira High School and worked as a farmer until World War II when he served with the Army Air Corps.

He moved to Spokane in 1945. He worked at Spokane Appliance Repair from 1964 until his retirement in 1984.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy; two daughters, Janet Massa of Little Rock, Ark., Joy Vibbert of Madras, Ore.; one son, Robert Thompson of Puyallup; and 17 grandchildren.

LeRoy Schermer Spokane

Memorial Service for LeRoy “Roy” Schermer, 71, was Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church. The Cremation Society of Washington was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schermer, who died Thursday, was born in Power, Mont.

He had lived in the Spokane Valley for 67 years and graduated from Central Valley High School.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, assigned to the 1st Floating Air Depot in the South Pacific.

He worked as a Spokane County deputy sheriff during the 1950s and ‘60s. He was also a juvenile probation officer for Spokane County. He was superintendent for the Hutton Settlement.

Mr. Schermer was a lifetime member and Elder of the Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly; one son, Randy of Redmond, Wash.; one daughter, Jan McAlpin of Spokane; two brothers, Kenneth Schermer of Port Angeles, and Eugene Schermer of Aberdeen, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Velma Martin Spokane

Service for Velma S. Martin, 98, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Ball & Dodd Funeral Home - North. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Martin, who died Thursday, was born in Argyle, Wis.

She graduated from high school in Jamestown, N.D.

She came to Spokane in 1970 from Lynnwood, Wash., where she had lived for 30 years.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

Her husband, John A. Martin, died in 1974.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Johnston; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter all of Spokane.

Francis Thompson Spokane

Funeral Mass for Francis X. “Frank” Thompson, 50, was Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Born in Colfax, Wash., Mr. Thompson died Tuesday.

He graduated from Gonzaga Prep in 1963.

He worked for the Army National Guard from 1966 to 1992 as a mechanic.

He is survived by his companion, Susan Thomas of Spokane, and his mother, Josephine Thompson of Spokane.

Eva Gallina Spokane

Service for Eva Gallina, 87, was Thursday at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel.

Mrs. Gallina died Jan. 2. She was born in Saulte Sainte Marie, Mich.

A Spokane resident since 1911, Mrs. Gallina was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church.

Her husband, Pat Gallina, preceded her in death.

She is survived by one sister, Estelle Sprague of Seattle.

Helen Stensgaard Spokane

Memorial service for Helen M. Stensgaard, 87, was Friday at Riverview Care Center Chapel.

Born in Ada, Minn., Mrs. Stensgaard died Jan. 1.

She graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., in 1929 with a degree in Latin. She taught high school Latin and social studies in Boscobel, Wis., from 1929 until 1935.

She went back to school and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in home economics education in 1939. She was a home demonstration agent in Minnesota, and Montesano, Wash., and moved to Spokane in 1952 as a county extension agent. She retired in 1969.

She was a member of Washington Home Economist Association, Spokane Soroptomist Club and Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. She had volunteered with Lutheran Services.

Survivors include two cousins, Bernice Christensen of Pleasant Hills, Calif., and Virginia Rinerson of Ada, Minn.

Edward Windus Spokane, Wash.

Funeral Mass for Edward Windus, 95, was Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Windus died Jan. 1. He was born in Elkton, S.D.

He had lived in Spokane for 51 years and had worked for Spokane International Railroad.

He was a member of the Catholic church.

There are no surviving family members.

Hazel Gonyou Spokane

Vigil service for Hazel Theodora Gonyou, 89, is set for 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Mrs. Gonyou, who died Wednesday, was born in Winona, Wash.

She had lived in Spokane for 77 years and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Gonyou; two daughters, Mary Beaulieu of West Bridge, British Columbia, and Connie Gonyou of Hayden Lake, Idaho; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

John Elias, Sr. Spokane

No service will be held for John Elias, Sr., 84. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Elias, who died Wednesday, was born in Chilton, Wis.

He had lived in the Priest River, Idaho, area for 35 years and was a self-employed saw filer since 1959.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Newport and the Newport Gun Club.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary; one son, John Elias of Spokane; three daughters, Mary Lou Hart of San Diego, Nancy Cone of Moses Lake, and Beverly Miller of El Granada, Calif.; one brother, Mike Elias of Pestige, Wis.; two sisters, Theresa Krause of Milwaukee, Wis., and Mary Cherry of Marinette, Wis.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Eugene Tracy Sr. Spokane

Funeral Mass for Eugene A. Tracy Sr., 80, was Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral. His son, the Rev. Eugene Tracy Jr., was the celebrant. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Tracy died Wednesday. He was born in Lewistown, Mont.

He had lived in Spokane since 1950 and had worked as a salesman.

He had served in the Navy.

He is survived by one son Rev. Eugene Tracy; two daughters, Sr. Mary Elizabeth Tracy of Washington, D.C., and Alice Weaver of Clarkston, Wash.; one sister, Loretta Hamley of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Donna MacArthur Spokane

Graveside service for Donna MacArthur, 79, was Friday at Greenwood Memorial Park.

Mrs. MacArthur, who died Tuesday, was born in Corbin, Ky.

She was a homemaker and was a 58-year Spokane resident.

She is survived by her husband, Mac MacArthur; two daughters, Connie Amsden of Spokane, and Bonnie Sligar of Liberty Lake; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Ned Miller Spokane

Service and burial for Ned D. Miller, 84, will be Tuesday in Waynesville, N.C., where he was born.

Mr. Miller died Jan. 2.

He had lived in Spokane since 1946 and worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 28 years. He retired in 1975.

He is survived by numerous cousins in North Carolina.

Evelyn Lohstroh Spokane

Service for Evelyn O. Lohstroh, 79, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Lohstroh died Thursday.

She graduated from Rogers High School and was a homemaker. She was a member of Magnolia Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 194.

Mrs. Lohstroh is survived by her husband, Henry “Hank” Lohstroh; one son, Larry Lohstroh of Spokane; one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Mosgaard Spokane

Service for Evelyn J. Mosgaard, 92, is set for 1 p.m. Jan. 12 at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Mosgaard, who died Dec. 31, was born in Richwood, Minn.

She had worked as a telephone operator for 30 years and retired in 1967.

She had lived in Spokane for more than 15 years.

She was a member of Shilo Baptist Church, the Telephone Pioneers, and the Teamsters Union.

Mrs. Mosgaard is survived by one son, Paul Weaver of Spokane; two daughters, Norma Imholte and Corlin Padgett, both of Hayward, Calif.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
