O’Meara’s Near-Perfect Round Guarantees Mercedes Victory

Mark O’Meara held off challenges from Nick Faldo and Scott Hoch, shooting a 68 and again playing near-perfect golf to win the Mercedes Championships on Sunday.

O’Meara missed only one fairway and two greens in the final round, just about the way he played the entire tournament, finishing the 72 holes at La Costa Resort and Spa at 17-under-par 271, shooting in the 60s all four rounds.

Hoch closed with a 66, stumbling with a bogey on the last hole, and Faldo, playing with O’Meara, shot a 67 but never managed to rattle O’Meara. Hoch and Faldo finished at 274, three strokes behind.
