5-Year-Old Crash Victim Still Critical

An Athol, Idaho, girl remained unconscious and in critical condition Monday, two days after a crash that killed her 8-year-old brother and severely injured their mother.

Sarah Weick, 5, is at Sacred Heart Medical Center’s pediatric intensive care unit, said Tina Weick, a relative.

“They’re still watching for swelling of the brain,” she said. “The doctors said it will be two or three days before she’s out of the woods completely. She’s still in a sleeping state.”

Family members are encouraged, she said, because the girl apparently is trying to wake up when she hears their voices. She wiggles and moves her eyes, Tina Weick said.

The girl suffered a fractured skull, ruptured diaphragm and abdominal injuries in Saturday’s crash. Her mother, Pam Weick, is in Kootenai Medical Center with a pierced lung.

The Idaho State Patrol said Pam Weick failed to stop at a stop sign and drove into the path of an oncoming semitruck shortly after midnight. The truck broadsided the car, killing Joshua Weick.

ISP investigators believe Pam Weick had been drinking. The results of a blood alcohol test weren’t available Monday.
