Cougars, Zags Earn Conference Honors

Gonzaga’s Scott Snider and Washington State’s Jenni Ruff were named players of the week by their basketball conferences.

Snider, a 6-foot-9 senior center, averaged 13.3 points and 8.6 rebounds in three wins to earn men’s honors for the West Coast Conference.

Ruff, a senior forward, pumped in 29 points in WSU’s 90-86 win over USC on Sunday. She also had 19 points and 12 rebounds in Friday’s loss at UCLA to earn women’s recognition in the Pacific-10 Conference.

The Whitworth men (8-2) climbed to 12th from 18th in the NAIA Division II poll.

Three other Northwest schools are in the top 15: Albertson, third; Willamette, eighth; and Oregon Tech, 14th.

Football

Washington State has signed two Los Angeles junior college transfers to national letters of intent.

The school said Michael Black and Jeff Banks will enroll and begin attending classes this month and will be eligible to play next season.

Black is a 6-foot, 215-pound running back out of Dorsey High School, who played two seasons at West Los Angeles Junior College. He was a two-year team captain.

Banks, a punter and place kicker, played two years at Citrus College, averaging 40 yards a punt. He hit 11 of 18 field goals his sophomore season. He played for Bishop Amat High in Upland, Calif., where his senior team was the 1992 California state champion.

Bowling

Sandy Reynolds of Spokane, averaging 204 for 18 games, finished fifth in the second annual Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour Sam’s Town Northwest Region Bay Bowl Open during the weekend in Bremerton.

Reynolds, who shared the second best won-lost record (5-3) in the match-play finals, won $270. Cindy Whiteman of Portland averaged 215 and had a 6-2 record to claim first place and the $750 winner’s check.

Prep basketball

In the first Associated Press Washington poll of the season, Chewelah (Class A) and Almira/ Coulee-Hartline (B) have No. 1 rankings among the boys and St. John-Endicott (B) among the girls.

The junior varisity of Class A-1 Lake City had too much firepower for Class A-4 Kootenai in a a 79-49 boys basketball victory in Harrison.

Kootenai (1-5) had 19 turnovers, 13 in the first half when it fell behind 39-20, and was unable to rebound with the Timberwolves.

Joe Lamb was the only Warrior in double figures with 10 points.
