Ewu Students Awarded Trustee Scholarships

Three Spokane Valley high school graduates have received $2,000 trustee scholarships from Eastern Washington University, selected for their outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements.

Mikel L. Stevenson, son of Dorothy and Loron Stevenson, Post Falls, is majoring in social work.

A 1966 graduate of East Valley High School, Stevenson is a senior and a representative of the school’s Undergraduate Faculty Committee.

Matthew Bergam, son of Veda and Blaine Bergam, Veradale, is a senior physical therapy major. He is a member of the Dean’s List, Phi Eta Sigma honor society, the National Dean’s list and University Honors. He is also fitness instructor at EWU and a flag football referee.

A 1992 graduate of Central Valley, Bergam was junior and senior class president, regional representative for the Washington Association of Student Councils executive board and a member of the National Honor Society.

Brian DeBoer, son of Barbara DeBoer of Spokane, and Marty DeBoer, Connell, Wash., is a senior mathematics major and a member of Pi Mu Epsilon mathematics honor society. He also plays intramural basketball.

At West Valley High School, he played varsity basketball and baseball and was a member of the National Honor Society and the Math Team.

Kimberly Nystrom, a 1988 graduate of Central Valley High School, recently earned a master’s degree in business administration from Washington State University.

Nystrom, daughter of John and Teri-ann Nystrom, Liberty Lake, was a member of WSU’s Honors Program and Gamma Phi Beta sorority.

Lorraine Eckelberg, daughter of David and Janice Eckelberg, Medical Lake, has been admitted into the University of Portland’s four-year honors program. Eckelberg, a freshman majoring in nursing, is active in the Air Force ROTC program and the Treasurer Honors Program. She graduated from Medical Lake High School in 1995.

Dawni Pietz, Spokane, won her second $2,343 Washington Award for Vocational Excellence scholarship at Western Washington University. Pietz is a junior with a 3.17 grade point average.
