Hot Stuff, Baby

One taste, and it’s no mystery why the Zavala family calls its hot sauce “No Joke.”

The fiery yet flavorful sauce was a hit at Zavala’s Place restaurant in Othello when it opened in 1966. Since 1994, it’s been bottled and sold in specialty stores and mail-order catalogs in both hot and medium (relatively speaking) versions.

Its reputation has been spreading like, well, wildfire. No Joke recently finished first at the Dallas Hot Food Show, and is again a finalist for the Albuquerque Fiery Food Show, where it previously placed second.

Price: $5.50 to $5.99 for a 10.5-ounce bottle.

Available: Mango ‘N Chili and Harry O’s Fresh Market in Spokane, and Spencer’s in Post Falls.
