College Basketball Tonight

WSU at Oregon

The Cougars (7-3 overall and 0-2 in the Pacific-10 Conference) look for their first league victory against the Ducks (8-4, 1-0) in a 7:05 p.m. matchup at McArthur Court.

At a glance: After home losses to UCLA and USC last week, WSU hopes to stop the bleeding on a road trip that has never been easy - with the exception of last season when it riddled both the NCAA-bound Ducks and Oregon State. Against Oregon, the Cougars used uncanny early shooting to build a 17-2 lead and embarrassed the Ducks 76-59. “We had passes that went in the basket, we were so hot,” said WSU coach Kevin Eastman, who hopes his banged-up club can draw some much-needed confidence from the memory of that rout. The Cougars won’t have Mark Hendrickson (broken hand), but backup point guard Kareem Jackson is available after missing two games to attend the funeral of his grandmother in Oakland, Calif. Oregon is reloading after last year’s march to the NCAA Tournament, but the Ducks still boast one of the league’s quickest and most productive point guards in junior Kenya Wilkins. Jamal Lawrence has been shooting it well from the other guard spot and coach Jerry Green has added an inside banger in Kyle Milling, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound transfer from UC-Santa Barbara, where he was named the Big West Conference freshman of the year in 1993. WSU has not rebounded well, especially on the offensive end, since Hendrickson went down. The Cougars will need better efforts on the boards from Tavares Mack and Carlos Daniel, along with continued production from the perimeter.

Leaders: WSU: Isaac Fontaine 19.6 ppg, 6.3 rpg; Donminic Ellison 15.6 ppg, 5.2 apg; Shamon Antrum 12.6 ppg. Oregon: Kenya Wilkins 16.0 ppg, 6.2 apg; Kyle Milling 15.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg; Jamal Lawrence 13.4 ppg.
