Lindsay Linerud Central Valley Year: Soph. Sport: Gymnastics Event: All-Around

Central Valley gymnast Lindsay Linerud attributes last week’s all-around victory over Ferris’ Liz Miller to two things.

Linerud started slowly this year because last summer she vacationed for two months in Germany.

“And I’ve been doing weight training and running and I think I’ve really improved,” the returning state-placer added.”I was very weak at the beginning of the season.

Linerud has an 11-year gymnastics background and was on Miller’s club team for many of those years.

“We’re kind of like buddies,” said Linerud.

Linerud took last summer off, however, to accompany her grandmother to a town near Munich, where they visited relatives and saw the sights.

“It’s a very different lifestyle, but I got used to it,” she said.

Though she came down with bronchitis last week, Linerud competed strongly to divide wins with Miller in four events and edge her by .05 for the all-around title.

“When they first announced it, the scores were wrong,” said Linerud, who didn’t find out until later that she had won. “I thought I had scored higher and I think she did, too. But it really doesn’t matter if I win.”

Spending a summer in Germany and preparing now for a return trip to state is enough.
