Microsoft Closes Door On Windows 95

Compiled From Wire Services

If you’ve updated to Windows 95 and have a problem with the operating system, you’ve got a more serious problem facing you in the future - especially if you’ve already made that first call to Microsoft’s technical support.

Microsoft is joining a new trend for software vendors: Charging for support.

Although you get 90 days of free technical support with Windows 95, if you have an early problem the clock is running out on that deadline.

Almost all vendors are moving to this style of support. Many companies are doing this type of support since profit margins are getting so thin.

Microsoft sends out a letter warning you when your free support ends and offers other “pay” solutions for you. Generally speaking, get ready to get out your wallet and expect to pay from $30 to $35 per incident (solution) or $1.95 per minute on a 900 number.

If you do have to make a pay-for call, have all your documentation, installation disks (including serial numbers), printouts of your configuration files and a description of the problem written out.

It will make the call shorter and less expensive.
