Mitterrand’s Brother Criticizes Doctors

Compiled From Wire Services

Francois Mitterrand’s doctors dismissed his brother’s accusations Wednesday that they did not do enough to save the French leader.

Dr. Adolph Steg, one of two doctors who responded to Robert Mitterrand’s comments, said Mitterrand received the appropriate treatment from the first signs of illness.

Mitterrand, president from 1981 to 1995, died Monday of prostate cancer at 79. Robert Mitterrand accused his doctors Tuesday of incompetence and said they could not agree how to treat him.

Robert Mitterrand said on national television that, when he suggested bringing in foreign experts, the doctors said it was unnecessary and refused.

On Wednesday, Francois Mitterrand’s widow, Danielle, issued a statement reaffirming the family’s support for his medical team.
