Associated Press

Pac-10/WCC/Big Sky

J.D. Vetter scored 14 points, including 8-for-9 from the free throw line, as Oregon State surprised Washington 63-55 Thursday night in Corvallis, Ore.

With a victory, the heavily favored Huskies would have had their best start since 1982. Instead, they shot 26 percent from the field (15 for 56) and fell to 8-4 overall, 1-2 in the Pac-10.

Oregon State (3-8, 1-1) outrebounded Washington 40-31 despite UW’s decided height advantage.

Beavers’ freshman Iyan Walker scored eight points in the first half as Oregon State took a 26-18 lead. The Beavers opened the second half with a 12-6 run to make it 38-24 with 11:25 to play.

Mark Sanford’s two free throws with 3:14 to play cut Oregon State’s lead to 49-43 but the Huskies came no closer.

Freshman Sasa Petrovic sank a 3-pointer and Vetter made four consecutive free throw lines to boost the lead to 56-43.

Washington was forced to foul, and the Beavers were 7-for-11 from the line the rest of the way.
