Colfax Defeats Lakeside, 53-51

Area girls

Both sides expressed relief Friday after third-ranked Colfax edged fourth-ranked Lakeside 53-51.

The Bulldogs (5-0, 11-0) knew they dodged a bullet because they trailed 18-10 in the second quarter and allowed Lakeside three shots to tie in the final 30 seconds.

The Eagles (4-1, 10-1), were encouraged by the narrow margin because they shot just 29 percent (18 of 62) from the field and played most of the game without foul-troubled senior leader Lora Jolley.

“I told the ladies that we passed the midterms,” said Colfax coach Terry Asbjornsen. “Now we have the rest of the semester to go.”

That includes a Feb. 2 game at Nine Mile, where the Bulldogs were hammered last year despite a narrow home win over Lakeside.

“If you play a poor game and lose by just two - in their gym - that’s something good,” said Eagles coach Lisa Shultz.

The game played out as expected, with Lakeside applying constant defensive pressure and the Bulldogs looking to work the ball inside.

Early benefits went to Lakeside, although at a price. Hounding the Bulldogs up top, Jolley (11.3 ppg) picked up her second foul 3:17 into the game, then reentered for 53 seconds of the second quarter before being assessed with No. 3. Jolley played less than 14 minutes combined and took just two shots and missed both.

Bernadette Rowse and Brianne Jolley picked up the slack, scoring 23 of the Eagles’ 26 first-half points. Yet Lakeside missed several easy shots off transition that would have forged a double-digit lead.

Colfax shrugged off a slow start when post Lindsay Thiele came off the bench to score 13 second-quarter points. Thiele finished with 17, on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, and was the perfect complement to senior starter Brooke Hansen (12 points; 6 of 7 from the field).

“There’s no way we beat Lakeside with one person,” Asbjornsen said. “That was definitely a team effort.”

Hansen’s three quick buckets in the third quarter led an 8-0 run for a 31-26 lead. Lakeside responded when Rowse made her second of four 3-pointers for a 37-36 edge. Rowse, a guard who averages seven points per game, scored 24 and had nine rebounds.

Colfax took its biggest lead 49-43 midway through the fourth quarter. Rowse’s final 3-pointer, and the game’s final points, came at 2:36, setting up a wild sequence of turnovers and missed opportunities.

Rowse missed a shot with 28 seconds left but the Eagles secured the rebound, called timeout with 17 seconds left and diagrammed a play for Brianne Jolley. Instead, Rowse tried a long shot with 4 seconds left, then Lakeside freshman Nikki Petticrew missed a short putback before the buzzer.

“We didn’t hit (Brianne) although she was open,” Shultz said. “But one good thing about playing here is the atmosphere was like state.”
