Mader Wins Downhill

At Kitzbuehel, Austria, Austria’s Guenther Mader made a record run and joined some all-time greats by winning a men’s World Cup downhill race.

Mader shattered the course record, as the weather finally allowed racing on an icy and fast course.

He raced down the 2-mile Hahnenkamm course in 1 minute, 54.29 seconds, nearly 2 seconds better than the previous best of 1:56.04 by Franz Heinzer of Switzerland in 1992.

Kyle Rasmussen was the top American, 11th in 1:56.22. The 1994 Olympic downhill gold medalist, Tommy Moe, still not in top form, finished 42nd in 1:58.50.

At Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Katja Seizinger scored an overwhelming victory in a World Cup super-giant slalom before home fans in southern Germany.

Seizinger, timed in 1 minute, 27.99 seconds, beat fellow German and World Cup leader Martina Ertl by .68 seconds.
