Ray Scores 30 Points; Ewu Wins

College women

Freshman Shana Ray scored a career-high 30 points and had eight rebounds as Eastern Washington hammered Idaho State 79-54 at Reese Court in Cheney.

Ray’s 30 points equaled the 17th-best performance in school history and was better than double her previous high of 13.

Ray, who was scoreless in Friday’s 63-55 win over Boise State, made 10 of 13 field goals and 9 of 13 free throws for EWU (4-9, 2-0).

Point guard Jennifer Sutter, who had 13 assists against BSU, had 11 against the Bengals (6-8, 0-2). Tina Smith chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds, and Resa Watterson added 12 points and seven boards.

“I think it is really important that you win your home games and defend your home court,” said Eastern coach Heidi VanDerveer, whose team has won just 6 of 23 preseason games the last two years. “We went through the same thing last year in the beginning of the season. It seems that when we get into the Big Sky schedule we kind of learn how to win.”
