Less than six months after his defetion from Cuba, pitcher Osvaldo Fernandez is a new millionaire. Hernandez, listed as 27 years old, officially signed a multiyear contract with the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park, guaranteeing him $3.6 million.

Interleague play, perhaps the most revolutionary change in baseball since the lively ball, was given a unanimous endorsement by the sport’s ruling executive council. The owners’ schedule-format committee proposed that each team play 15-16 interleague games starting in 1997.

Colorado Rockies pitcher Bret Saberhagen has begun a seven-day-a-week, dawn-to-dusk rehabilitation program aimed at averting surgery on his ailing right shoulder and getting him back on the mound early this season.
