Improved Viks Still Fall Big To Lake City

Greg Lee Staff Writer

Sometimes small victories must suffice.

Case in point, the Coeur d’Alene High School girls basketball team. The Vikings played much better the second time around against Lake City on Tuesday night.

In fact, the Vikings’ shooting was much improved and they hustled until the final buzzer at Viking Gym.

And Coeur d’Alene nearly doubled its scoring from the first game.

Still, it wasn’t enough to make up for the most glaring difference between the teams as Lake City rolled to a 68-36 victory in the next-to-last Inland Empire League and regular season game for both teams.

The victory combined with Post Falls’ 49-46 win over Lewiston clinched second place (5-2) for the Timberwolves. LC and league champion Sandpoint will play host to first-round Region I Tournament games next week. LC raised its overall record to 11-6.

CdA, destined for a loser-out playoff Tuesday against either Post Falls or Lewiston, dropped to 0-7 and 4-15.

LC humiliated CdA 62-19 when the teams played in early December.

CdA never scored in double digits in any quarter in the first game. After being outscored 39-13 in the first half Tuesday, the Vikings kept it respectable in the final two quarters as LC added just six points to the final margin (29-23).

LC coach Dave Stockwell got exactly what he wanted out of the game. It was an opportunity for all his players to play.

“It was a good win, we got to play everybody and we did some nice things,” he said. “Against a team like this I’m more concerned about getting everybody out of here unhurt. We needed a game like this because the last four have been real close.”

Playing especially well off the bench for the T-Wolves was senior wing Laura Tolzmann. She scored a game-high 16 points.

Tolzmann wasn’t without assistance. Heather Stetson followed with 15 points and eight rebounds, Katie Hatrock had 13 points and six assists, Lindsay Herbert added 11 points and 6-foot-3 sophomore post Alison Asher added six points, six rebounds and seven blocked shots.

LC used a 14-0 spurt to build a 22-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The Viks, who committed 31 turnovers, had trouble in the second quarter against LC’s halfcourt trap. The T-Wolves used four Vik turnovers to go on a 10-0 run late in the second quarter to expand a 14-point lead to a 26-point advantage by halftime.

Amber Orr led CdA with 11 points. But Vik coach Sheila Sharp thought post Kim Pearson deserved the hustle award. Pearson finished with six points and 12 rebounds.

CdA, which made an arctic 7 percent of its shots from the field (4 of 56) in the first game, made 15 of 58 Tuesday.
