Saxons Outwork Shadle

Dave Trimmer Staff Writer

GSL girls basketball

The Ferris game plan against Shadle Park Tuesday night was more mental than physical.

The Saxons worked it to perfection when they needed to, scoring a 48-34 victory over the Highlanders at Spokane Falls Community College as the Greater Spokane League girls basketball season reached midseason.

“We just know how (coach) Linda Sheridan gets her team fired up,” Ferris coach Janet Skaife said. “We wanted to come out and outcompete them because they usually outcompete everybody they play.

“I don’t think I was surprised because of the way we prepared for Shadle. After such a poor start against LC (last Friday), we knew we couldn’t afford that again.”

After a 2-2 tie, Ferris (7-1, 10-2) held the Highlanders (5-3, 8-4) scoreless for more than 6 minutes and raced to a 13-2 lead.

The Highlanders had a 2:50 scoring draught that spanned the quarter break and another 4:16 scoreless span late in the second quarter, falling behind 27-12 at halftime.

“We just didn’t show up tonight,” Sheridan said. “I just can’t understand it after we played so well against Gonzaga Prep (a 57-44 road win Friday).”

After Shadle Park cut a 19-point third-quarter deficit to six early in the fourth quarter, the Saxons recovered.

“We missed a lot of good shots that changed momentum,” Skaife said, “but we played with poise and we were able to regain control.”

Rainie Drake had nine points in a 10-0 run as Shadle Park pulled within 35-28 after three quarters. When Sara Harchuck scored from the lane with 5:55 to play it was 37-31.

Then Ferris sophomore Janelle Morrisette followed her own miss with a bucket, her senior sister Jayme converted a turnover into a 3-pointer from the right corner and sophomore Amy George drove for a layup after a turnover and the lead was back to 13 with just over 3 minutes to play.

The Saxons had a balanced attack and made up for 18-of-57 shooting with a huge rebounding edge. Janelle Morrisette and Jennifer Swinton had 12 rebounds apiece and George 10.

Janelle Morrisette and Swinton combined for 10 of the first 12 Ferris points when the Saxons guards went 3 for 19 in the second half.
