Twin Powers From Moses Lake Commit To Play Football At WSU

Twins Reed and Ryan Raymond, a pair of huge offensive linemen from Moses Lake, have made an oral commitment to play football for Washington State this fall.

Reed, a 6-foot-10, 280-pound guard, was a Class AAA first-team all-stater last season. Ryan, a 6-9, 270-pound tackle, was named to the second all-state team.

They chose WSU after also making recruiting visits to Nevada-Las Vegas and Montana, according to their mother, Linda.

“They’re very close and they were hoping to go somewhere as a package deal,” she said. “They chose Washington State because of a combination of football, academics and the coaches there.”

Moses Lake was 3-6 last season.

Track and field

Longtime Eastern Washington track and field coach Jerry Martin has returned to retirement, handing over the reins to assistant Stan Kerr, who will serve in an interim capacity.

Kerr’s debut will be Saturday when the Eagles open the season by hosting the Early Bird Indoor Meet at EWU’s Thorpe Fieldhouse. Men and women athletes from most area colleges, as well as some high schools, are expected. Field events begin at 9 a.m., running events at 11:30 a.m.

Even after 19 seasons as a head track coach at Eastern, Martin will only be semi-retired. He will remain on Eastern’s staff as an assistant coach for Kerr and women’s coach Marcia Mecklenburg.

Martin was Eastern’s track and field coach for 16 seasons from 1971-86, and cross country coach from 1976-86 before retiring to concentrate on his teaching duties in the physical education department. He returned to coaching in the fall of 1992 and has been Eastern’s track and cross country coach since.

Kerr, a graduate assistant at EWU from 1991-93, returned to Eastern last fall as an assistant to Martin and Mecklenburg. A former school record-holder in the 400 meters, he received his bachelor’s degree from Eastern in 1980 and his master’s from EWU in 1993.

After he left Eastern in 1993, Kerr became head men’s coach at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Basketball

Assisting two teammates to career-best scoring performances in a pair of victories during the weekend, Eastern Washington junior point guard Jennifer Sutter of Moses Lake has been selected as the Big Sky Conference women’s player of the week.

Sutter reached double figures in assists with a career-high 13 against Boise State and 11 vs. Idaho State. She also had four steals, eight rebounds, two blocked shots and 10 points.

Against BSU, senior Kristy Missall scored a career-high 28 points. The next night in a 25-point win over ISU, freshman Shana Ray had the 17th-best performance in school history with 30 points.
