Irvin Defends Use Of Foul Language

From Wire Reports

Michael Irvin remained a man of his four-letter word Wednesday.

In adamant self-defense from the Cowboys’ locker room, Irvin defiantly refused to apologize and unleashed more profanities. He stared into the mini-cams and microphones and at least five times repeated the expletive he delivered on live national television after Dallas clinched the NFC championship and another Super Bowl appearance.

“I knew exactly what I was saying,” Irvin said. “Those of you who can’t believe I said it, believe it.

“Cursing is not always bad. It shows the depth of emotions. I could have said you all gave us mess, but you didn’t give us mess. I could have said you all gave us a bunch of stuff, but you didn’t give us a bunch of stuff. So if I said that, it doesn’t seem right because you gave us a bunch of expletive.”

Irvin used the same obscenity during the Texas Stadium trophy presentation that the Fox Network broadcast across the country. His unseemly language came as he tried to credit beleaguered Cowboys coach Barry Switzer for his part in the team making the Super Bowl.

The fact that Dallas teammate Nate Newton and Pittsburgh’s Greg Lloyd also used obscenities has become controversial, as complaints were filed with the teams, networks and the NFL.

Seahawk’s trial begins

Lamar Smith of the Seahawks was impaired by alcohol and was speeding when he crashed his vehicle into a traffic median and utility pole in the accident that paralyzed teammate Mike Frier, a prosecutor said in Seattle.

But defense lawyer Allen Ressler said that although the crash was “a tragic accident … this was not an accident that resulted from his drinking too much.”

Dolphins fire Greene

Miami Dolphins defensive line coach Joe Greene will be replaced by Carolina Panthers assistant Cary Godette, one of three assistants hired by the club.

The Dolphins also hired former Oklahoma State coach Pat Jones to coach tight ends and former Georgia Tech coach Bill Lewis as a defensive coach.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly likely will have an operation on his throwing shoulder this week.
