Bruins Win 10th In Row

Associated Press

Pac-10

Offense has not been the most important item for Jelani McCoy this season. Yet when the opportunity presented itself, he was ready.

McCoy, a freshman center, scored 21 points Thursday night and No. 13 UCLA beat Arizona State 87-73 in Tempe, Ariz., for its 10th straight victory.

“My teammates were looking to give me the ball and I had a lot of opportunities. I’m going to take advantage of everything they give me,” said McCoy, who leads the conference with 56 blocked shots but ranks fourth among Bruins in scoring.

UCLA played most of the second half without star Charles O’Bannon. He was benched about 3 minutes into the half by coach Jim Harrick after being called for a technical foul for taunting Arizona State center Okeme Oziwo.

“I want the kind of team that there’s somebody different leading us every night,” Harrick said.

Toby Bailey and J.R. Henderson each had 15 points for the Bruins (12-3, 5-0), and Kris Johnson had 10. Ron Riley scored 28 points for Arizona State (5-7, 0-4), which lost its 14th in a row to the Bruins.
