Two New Sheriff’s Substations Set To Open At Valley Locations

Brian Coddington Staff Writer

Spokane Valley residents will open two new neighborhood sheriff’s substations - one in the central Valley and the other in the southwest.

SCOPE (Sheriff’s Community Oriented Policing Effort) Central Valley has already assembled a 10-member board of directors and could be open as soon as next month, organizer Deanna Hormann said.

The group will hold its first public meeting Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Central Valley High School multipurpose room. Hormann expects up to 200 people to attend.

“Even though we’re in a low crime area, I don’t think we need to sit back and wait for it to happen,” Hormann said.

SCOPE CV volunteers will staff an office in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 810 S. Sullivan. Hormann hopes the group will move in early next month.

“It gives us an organization point,” she said.

Boundaries for SCOPE CV will follow Central Valley High School’s attendance area, Hormann said.

Residents who live near Edgecliff Park are also close to opening a SCOPE station. The sheriff’s department has offered organizers a use of a house at 7206 E. First, said Terry Carver, sheriff’s department SCOPE program manager.

Organizers have two weeks to solicit five volunteers to be trained to man what they are calling SCOPE Edgecliff.

“I’m sure it’s going to be a go,” said organizer Ken Tinkham.

SCOPE Edgecliff would serve the Pratt Elementary attendance area, Tinkham said.

Neighbors there organized last month after Charles E.L. Smith, a Level III sex offender, moved into the area. An enthusiastic response to a neighborhood patrol and Block Watch have Tinkham excited that interest in SCOPE will take off.

“That Smith thing has got us started,” he said. “We’re going to keep pushing.”

“They just want to take control of their own area,” Carver said.

Basic orientation training for SCOPE CV is scheduled for Feb. 3. Volunteers must complete the introductory course to operate the station, Carver said.

Carver predicted that SCOPE CV’s office in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will be only a temporary home. Developers of the Spokane Valley Mall have approached the Sheriff’s Department about setting aside office space for SCOPE CV in the new mall, he said.

The mall office also would likely be staffed by a sheriff’s deputy, a Washington State Patrol trooper and possibly a corrections officer, Carver said.
