Deaf Actress To Present One-Woman Show, Workshop

Julianna Fjeld, a deaf television and stage actress, will stage “A One Woman Show” for Spokane Community College’s “Celebration of Abilities” at 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., Friday at the SCC Lair Auditorium.

She will also present a workshop, “Discover Your Power in Drama,” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Fjeld, co-producer of an Emmy-winning “Hallmark Hall of Fame” program, has appeared in several TV movies-of-the-week and was a featured actress on “Dallas.”

Inland Northwest writers who are at least 18 years old can enter a contest sponsored by the Spokane branch of the National League of American Pen Women.

Works of poetry, fiction and non-fiction can be submitted. Poetry entries should be no longer than 20 lines; fiction and non-fiction works must be less than 2,000 words. Entries can be on any topic.

All pieces must be unpublished and original. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Members of Delta Gamma Alumnae recently demonstrated computer equipment to members of the Lilac Blind Foundation. The equipment was paid for with a combination of grants and money donated by Delta Gamma.

The five laptop computers, a Kerswell Reader, a Hewett-Packard Computer and a Okadata Printer are designed to help visually impaired people.

Donna Hanson, secretary of social ministry for the Spokane Catholic Diocese, will discuss the United Nations Conference on Women at a Jan. 30 luncheon sponsored by World Mutual Services.

Hanson attended the UN’s National Conference on Women last year in Beijing, China.

Proceeds from the 11:30 a.m. luncheon in the YWCA’s Comstock Room, will benefit World Mutual programs which include helping Pakistani women and girls receive a basic education, low-income families and children in Bangladesh receive an education and vocational skills, and feeding children in Zimbabwe.

Tickets are $10 and seating is limited. Reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis and must be paid for by Thursday. For reservations, call 326-1190.

Brandon Ferrantes, a 15-year-old Ferris High School sophomore, was the local winner of the Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the Department of Washington Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary.

Ferrantes, of District 9 (from Colville to Tekoa, Wash.), is one of 17 district winners from across the state to attend the VFW’s annual conference this weekend at the Red Lion, downtown.

Jenny Johnson, Shelton, Wash., won the state title, selected from district winners. She will go on to the national level.

Winners of the grade-school essay contest were to be announced Saturday.
