Brooks’ Consistency Pays Off In Bob Hope Classic Victory

Compiled From Wire Services

Mark Brooks, a first-round co-leader who remained at or near the front the entire tournament, shot a 5-under-par 67 Sunday to win the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in Palm Desert, Calif., by a stroke.

He finished with a second consecutive round of 67 for a 23-under total of 337 for the 90-hole event.

Brooks began the final round tied for the lead with John Huston, Payne Stewart and Jeff Maggert.

Huston shot 68 to finish second. His birdie on the last hole pulled him from a tie with Scott Hoch, who was already in the clubhouse at 21-under.

In Dorado, Puerto Rico, South Africa’s John Bland birdied the final two holes to overtake defending champion Jim Colbert and win the Senior Tournament of Champions by one stroke.

Bland shot a 2-under-par 70 over a still-saturated Hyatt Dorado Beach course to finish at 9-under-par 279 and win his second Senior PGA event in four starts.

It took five tries, but rookie Karrie Webb finally got the 18th hole right and won the LPGA HealthSouth Inaugural in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., in a playoff.

Webb, who finished second in last week’s LPGA Tournament of Champions, tapped in for par on the fourth extra hole and claimed the $67,500 winner’s check when Jane Geddes rolled a 5-foot putt wide of the cup.

Tracy Hanson from Rathdrum, Idaho, shot a final round 71, finishing five strokes off the pace. She earned $6,170.
