Ferris Beats Mead Thanks To Switch

GSL boys

The change was small, but it made a huge difference for the third-ranked Ferris Saxons.

With just a minor defensive adjustment, Ferris ended Mead’s nine-game winning streak 64-44 and broke the tie atop the Greater Spokane League boys basketball standings.

The game was part of eight games played on two courts before 2,740 spectators at the Arena Tuesday night.

The lead changed hands six times in the first 10 minutes before the Saxons (12-1, 8-1) went on a 14-0 run, holding the Panthers (10-4, 8-2) scoreless for nearly 6 minutes. That gave Ferris a 29-18 half-time lead. When the Saxons scored the first nine points of the third quarter, the romp was on.

“The defense clicked a little better,” Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said. “We made one little adjustment. We sagged a little more to help on the baseline. We felt like we needed to do a good defensive job on their three main scorers.

“The key was the defensive job we did on Damian (Long) on the baseline in the first half. He does a good job attacking the basket and we did a good job holding position.”

Another boost, Gilman said, was when a couple starters returned to the lineup after their first rest and sparked the offensive end of the run. Chris Hardan started the surge with a 3-pointer, Craig Henneberry had an amazing drive, Justin Bursch drilled a 3 from the right wing, Scott Stocum made a layup and Leonard Harmon hit from the right edge of the foul line.

That’s all five starters, 12 points, game over.

“Ferris played very well; they beat us in every aspect of the game,” Mead coach Jim Preston said. “Their players and coaches were ready to play.”

Harmon led the Saxons, who made 27 of 52 shots, including 5 of 8 3s, with 20 points.

Mencke finished with 25 points and played with four fouls from midway through the fourth quarter. Homer added 18.

Sophomore Ryan Smith sparked CV with 20 points, including four of the Bears’ five in the first overtime.
