Kids Skip Because Classes Aren’t Interesting Enough

Marques Johnson/Glover

The Truancy Center: one place no kids want to be. This is where kids who get caught skipping end up. On school days, two police officers patrol popular hangouts and pick up kids who are supposed to be in school. After being picked up, the kids are taken to the center and their parents are called.

That’s how the school district has chosen to deal with skippers. But does anyone wonder why kids skip to start with? I think kids skip because school just isn’t interesting enough. It seems that all we do is sit in classes while teachers lecture us, then we go to boring convocations. Unlike in elementary school, we hardly get to go on field trips, learning isn’t exciting and most of the teachers are so busy complaining, they don’t have enough time for the students.

I think fewer kids would cut class if teachers made class interesting and fun. For me, every day ends in good fashion. Not only do I feel great because I get to go home soon, but I have two of the best teachers in my last two classes.

Now, they’re not perfect but they are good. Instead of the usual lectures, they get down to business. They don’t put up with troublemakers; they don’t endlessly lecture us, and they don’t teach us stuff that we will never use again. These two teachers are nice; they have good senses of humor, and they give you more respect than most other teachers.

If there was a perfect teacher, he or she would be funny, interesting and always nice. He or she wouldn’t be easy and let you get away with stuff you shouldn’t be doing, and wouldn’t be really stiff and grumpy. This teacher would be respectful, trusting and with the times. He or she would make us feel good about ourselves and treat us as though we are friends and equals, not just as students.

But to get a perfect teacher, the students would have to be near perfect and willing. So, the solution is simple: For students to stop skipping, classes need to be more interesting, and in order to get that perfect teacher, you as students need to be as perfect as you can be.
