Cheney Streaks Past Rams

Frontier League

Cheney’s impressive win streaks seemed all but over Friday when the old Blackhawks materialized.

State AA Tournament veterans Anna Getz and Christine Reagan provided the fourth-quarter offense, but it was Cheney’s defense that dispatched a 15th consecutive Frontier League opponent.

The ninth-ranked Blackhawks (11-2, 5-0) held visiting Riverside scoreless for the final 4 minutes, 23 seconds and overcame the Rams 41-36. Cheney won its 10th straight and terminated a seven-game streak by the Rams (8-4, 3-1).

Cheney is 36-4 during the last two seasons.

Cheney trailed 32-24 with 1:02 left in the third quarter, but tied the game with an 8-0 run over the next 4 minutes. After that, sophomore point guard Getz scored seven of her game-high 21 points and Reagan hit two big free throws with 45 seconds left. Reagan, a 6-foot senior post, had missed 6 of 8 free throws until then.

The Blackhawks outscored the Rams 17-4 over the final 9:02.

“We made a defensive adjustment in the fourth quarter,” said relieved Blackhawks coach Marty Jessett. “We switched into a man-to-man, (that was) the main thing.”

Riverside played the aggressor after Getz had two of her four 3-pointers to stake Cheney to a 9-2 lead. The Rams pieced together a 10-0 run and held Cheney scoreless for gaps of 4-1/2 and 6 minutes.

“We didn’t take care of the ball like we should have, but part of that was the way (Riverside) played,” Jessett said.

Although three Rams starters never scored, coach Chris Wren shuffled in four reserves who accounted for 20 points. Sophomore Keshia Shorts was top sub with 10 points, including six in the first quarter.

Sophomore point guard Bernice Stime also hurt Cheney with her scoring (10) and offensive penetration.

“We knew going in that they were well-balanced,” Jessett said of the Rams. “We sort of contained (Stime) in the second half.

Reagan had 11 rebounds and Getz nine to lead Cheney’s 35-27 advantage. Anderson added seven assists.
