Blizzard Of Prep Postponements
Blizzard conditions Saturday wiped out the bulk of area high school basketball games. Inland Empire League officials postponed the A-1 Region I girls championship game involving league champion Sandpoint (16-2) and defending state champion Lake City (12-7).
That game and the loser-out contest involving Lewiston (10-9) and Post Falls (12-10) will be played Monday at Sandpoint High School. The PF-Lewiston game will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the title game. The champion advances to state.
If the regional games are played Monday, the tourney will conclude Wednesday. The PF-Lewiston survivor will meet the championship-game loser. That winner will advance to a playoff at Grangeville on Saturday against the fourth-place finisher from District III (Boise area) for a state berth.
Two final Intermountain League girls games, meanwhile, were canceled and will not be made up. IML officials set seeding for the A-2 District I-II Tournament, which begins Tuesday with two loser-out games at Post Falls High School.
League champion and No. 1 seed Moscow (18-1) and No. 2 Bonners Ferry (13-6) receive first-round byes. In the opening games Tuesday, No. 3 Priest River (10-8) takes on No. 6 Kellogg (7-13) at 6 p.m. followed by No. 4 Lakeland (3-14) meeting No. 5 St. Maries (6-13). St. Maries and Kellogg finished tied in league and a coin flip determined the teams’ seeding.
The tourney continues Wednesday when Bonners Ferry takes on the Priest River-Kellogg winner at 6 p.m. In the second game, Moscow meets the Lakeland-St. Maries survivor.
The district title game will be played Friday. Two teams advance to state.
Five boys games were postponed Saturday.
They were: Lewiston at Coeur d’Alene, Moscow at Lakeland, St. Maries at Priest River, Bonners Ferry at Wallace and Kootenai at Deary.
The Lewiston-CdA game will be made up Monday or Tuesday. Officials will make a decision Monday morning.
The other games will be made up on dates to be determined.
