Gunmen wielding automatic pistols opened fire Sunday on a moderate Islamic leader outside his mosque.
Sheik Ahmed Sahnoun, 89, was hospitalized in satisfactory condition after the attack in Algiers, the capital of this North African nation bloodied by a four-year insurgency.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the shooting.
Authorities said that several weeks ago, Sahnoun had spoken out against the violence being waged by armed factions trying to overthrow the Algerian government and install strict Islamic rule.
