America Online has dropped its Tape Trader’s Central area, which provided a nexus for rock fans who wanted to trade bootleg concert tapes.
Trading of the tapes made by fans at concerts is a copyright violation, although certain acts have permitted the practice.
The AOL area was sponsored by ABC Television, part of the Walt Disney Co., both of which are understandably strong proponents of copyright protection.
ABC issued a statement saying it believed the bands listed “supported the free exchange of concert tapes. We are contacting all of the bands to be sure they have no objection to being included in the Tape Traders site.”
But AOL said it wants to independently check out the legal fine print.
