District 81 Recognizes Staffers Of The Year

Spokane School District No. 81 recently presented four employees as Certified Staffers of the Year.

Gert Schweim, an office manager at Chase Middle School, has been a Spokane Public School employee for 12 years. She was credited with being a source of stability at Chase Middle School as the new school wrestled with its identity in its first two years of existence.

Marilyn Morgan, music office manager, was nominated by every music teacher in the district. Her 22-year employ with the school district has been entirely in the music office. She’s known as “The Mom.”

Mari Brown, teacher of developmentally delayed primary students at Finch Elementary, an employee with the schools for four years, said of her award, “I might as well retire now, because I’ve got everything I could ask for.”

Michael Folsom, a counselor in Indian education, has worked for Spokane Public Schools four years. He previously worked with Native American public education students in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Several Eastern Washington University students enrolled in the Reserve Officer Training Corps were presented with awards at the 1996 Achievement Day ceremony.

The students and their awards are:

Michael Bromund, American Defense Preparedness Association; Jennifer King, Association of the United States Army ROTC Medal; Robert Rochon, AUSA Military History; Lisa Weister, Reserve Officer Association (ROA) (sophomore); ROA (Junior), Evan Logan; ROA (senior), Kermit Brown; American Legion Military (junior), Amy Dersham; and American Legion Military (senior), Jason Archibald.

Barry Ruppelius, Veterans of Foreign Wars; Heather Stubbs, American Veterans of World War II; Robert Rochon, National Sojourner’s; David Rubin, Military Order of the World Wars Bronze (MOWW) (sophomore); MOWW Silver (junior), Robert Rochon; and MOWW Gold (senior), Kurt Harsh.

Christie Hume, Daughters of the American Revolution; Roger Miick, Daughters of the Founders and Patriots of America; Amy Dersham, The Retired Officer Association; Lisa Weister, Society of the War of 1812; American Legion Scholastic (junior), Evan Logan; American Legion Scholastic (senior), Jess Calohan; Sons of the American Revolution, Michael Fettig; Superior Cadet (freshman), Roger Miick; Superior Cadet (sophomore), Lisa Weister, Superior Cadet (junior), Evan Logan; and Superior Cadet (senior), Kermit Brown.

Daniel Hauge, son of Barbara Hauge, Spokane, received an Outstanding Graduate Award in the University Honors Program from Western Washington University. One student from each department is chosen for the honor based on grades, research and writing, service to the campus and community, and promise for the future.
