Obituaries

George Holmes Spokane

Visitation for George W. Holmes, 84, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Big Meadows, Wash., Mr. Holmes died Monday.

He graduated from Mead High School.

He had worked for H. Earl Clack and Husky Oil Company as a truck driver and maintenance person, and retired from Northwest Pump and Equipment in 1976.

He was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 2.

Mr. Holmes is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Holmes; two sons, Floyd Holmes of Spokane and Howard Holmes of Lewiston; a daughter, Doris Miller of Spokane; a sister, Lois Stephens of Eugene, Ore.; four grandchildren, two stepgrandsons and three great-grandsons.

Joseph Poire Spokane

Visitation for Joseph H. Poire, 67, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Poire, a 44-year Spokane resident, died Sunday.

He was born in Laconia, N.H.

Mr. Poire served in the Air Force. He retired in 1993 after 34 years at Calkin’s Distributors, where he was a manager.

He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kathleen Poire; two sons, Joseph Poire of Garfield, Wash., and John Poire of Missoula; three brothers, Bob Poire of Boston, and Ernie and Leo Poire, both of New Hampshire; his mother, Gabrielle Poire of New Hampshire; and a granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or the American Cancer Society.

Irma Smart Hermiston, Ore.

Funeral Mass for Irma Ann Smart, 65, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smart died Monday in Hermiston, where she had lived for 18 months.

She was born in Melstone, Mont., and graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School.

She moved to Spokane in 1977 and worked as a bookkeeper for a construction company.

She is survived by her husband, LeRoy Smart of Hermiston; three sons, David Gridley of Boise, Mike Rosen of Lewiston and Joe Rosen of Moscow, Idaho; two daughters, Cydney Comstock and Kathy Huffman, both of Greenacres; a stepdaughter, Susan Pilkindton of Redding, Calif.; a brother, Phillip Crum of Tigard, Ore.; a sister, Alice Primozich of Salem, Ore.; and 14 grandchildren.

Alma Gilbert Boulder, Colo.

Memorial service for Alma W. Gilbert, a former Spokane resident, will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Gilbert, who died June 18, was 89.

She was born in Moseley, Mich.

She graduated from Western State University in Kalamazoo, Mich., as a physical education major. She taught for four years in public schools before she earned a master’s degree in public health and hygiene from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. She then taught for four more years at Normal State University in Illinois.

In 1938, she married the Rev. Rudolph Gilbert, a former minister for 15 years at the Unitarian Church in Spokane.

They moved to Spokane in 1957.

She was one of the founders of Planned Parenthood of Spokane.

She and her husband retired to Boulder in 1972. He died in 1986.

Survivors include two sons, John Gilbert of Seattle and Stephen Gilbert of Mexico; and three grandsons.

Tony Debing Spokane

Vigil service for Tony Debing, 77, will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Debing, who was born in Bend, Ore., died Monday.

He had lived in Spokane since 1943 and operated a retail and wholesale meat market in Spokane for many years.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Debing was a member of the Meat Cutters Union for more than 50 years.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Alberta Debing; a son, Anthony Debing of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters, Yvonne Snyder and Vivien Cobb, both of Spokane, and Therese Debing of Carefree, Ariz.; a sister, Marion Winkler of Yakima; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Alfred Coles Post Falls

Rosary for Alfred Lawrence Coles, 66, will be Friday at 6 p.m. at St. George’s Catholic Church in Post Falls. Service will be Saturday at St. George’s at 9 a.m. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Coles, who was born in British Columbia, died Tuesday.

He moved to Post Falls 60 years ago from Canada and was a crane operator for Bonneville Power Co. Mr. Coles was a Navy veteran and served in Korea and was also a member of St. George’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Dolores; two sons, Steven Coles of Moses Lake and Timothy Coles of Garfield, Wash.; daughter, Susan Klaus of Yakima; two brothers, Robert Coles of Post Falls, and William Coles of Blanchard, Idaho; three sisters, Rosemary Dickson of Post Falls, and Margaret Payne and Mary Jo Stith, both of Vancouver, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.

Hugh Van Hook Clarkston, Wash.

No service is planned for Hugh W. Van Hook, 71. Merchant Funeral Home in Clarkston, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Van Hook, a former Spokane resident, died Thursday.

He was born in Spokane, graduated from Rogers High School in 1942 and entered the Navy the same year.

He married Lorna White in 1944 and they settled in Spokane after the war.

Mr. Van Hook worked for Spokane Upholstery and Inland Advertising of Spokane.

They moved to Clarkston in 1953 and he worked for Inland Advertising. In the early 1960s he worked for Key Distributors. He was also selfemployed, and worked for the Big R, constructing steel and metal buildings. He retired in 1987.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kathleen Buffalo of Aberdeen, S.D.; a son, David Van Hook of Clarkston; a sister, Valaire Larson of SeaTac, Wash.; a brother, Dale Van Hook of Spokane; three granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.

William Fowler Spokane

Service for William J. “Bill” Fowler, 81, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will be at Moran Prairie Cemetery.

Mr. Fowler, who died Sunday, was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, and had lived in Spokane since 1923.

He was a carpenter and cabinet maker. He owned East Trent Cabinet Works from 1948 to 1973, when he retired.

He was a member of the International Footprint Association and an honorary member of the Spokane Police Guild.

Mr. Fowler is survived by his wife, Florence Fowler; a son, Harry Fowler of Spokane; a daughter, Peggy Hack of Okanogan, Wash.; two sisters, Edith Kennedy of Los Angeles and Helen Stillwell of Spokane; a brother, Lawrence Fowler of Spokane; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Sister Rose Francis Seymour, O.P. Spokane

Rosary for Sr. Rose Francis Seymour, O.P., will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Inchelium, Wash. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Hall Creek Cemetery in Inchelium.

Sr. Seymour, 62, died Sunday from pneumonia. She was also afflicted with crippling arthritis.

She was born Marian May Seymour in Inchelium.

She enter the Dominican congregation in 1953 and received a bachelor’s degree from the Holy Names College. She taught school at St. Mary’s Mission School in Omak, Wash., and at Assumption Catholic School in Spokane. She also did office work in Tonasket, Colville and Chewelah, Wash.

She was a member of the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters, Sinsinawa, Wis., formerly the Spokane Dominicans.

Sr. Seymour was also a member of the Colville Confederated Tribe and attended conferences and gatherings of the tribe and the Kateri Ministry Institute.

Survivors include four brothers, Eddie, David, Paul and Rickie Seymour, all of Inchelium, and two sisters, Ada Holford of Inchelium, and Therese Milton of Seattle.

Jerome Bolick Pullman

Memorial service for Jerome Carroll Bolick, 29, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Simpson United Methodist Church in Pullman. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bolick died Tuesday at home from complications from multiple sclerosis. He was a percussionist.

He was born in Spokane, graduated from Pullman High School and attended Washington State University.

Survivors include his parents, Bill and Mardi Bolick of Pullman; a sister, JoAnn Bolick of Moses Lake; a foster sister, Jackie Fiegel of Pullman; and his grandfather, Jerome Bolick of Pullman.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Orin Pitt Phoenix, Ariz.

Service for Orin Leonard Pitt, a former Spokane resident, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hardin, Mont.

Mr. Pitt, 67, died Saturday in Phoenix, where he had lived since he retired in 1988.

He was born in Casper, Wyo., and moved to Spokane from Hardin in 1949. In Spokane, he worked in real estate and at Arden’s Dairy until 1976.

He moved to Orem, Utah, in 1976 and worked for Meadowgold Dairy there until retirement.

He served in the Air Force.

He is survived by two sons, Jim and Bill Pitt, both of Spokane; a daughter, Carol Smith of Spokane; three sisters, Arlene Lachenmeier of Hardin, Betty Dinsdale of Valentine, Mont., and Dorothy Scherer of Billings; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Donald Patrick Sumner, Wash.

Service for Donald R. Patrick, 60, was Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial was at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Patrick, who died Friday, was born in Dover, Idaho.

He was a home builder in the Spokane area and moved to the Seattle area three years ago.

He served in the Air Force and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Lorana; two sons, Von Patrick of Hampton, Va., and Michael Patrick of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Elizabeth Worthington of Sacramento; a brother, Jack Patrick of Tacoma; a sister, Joan Barnes of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Gregg Ulrigg Spokane

Memorial service for Gregg Lee Ulrigg, 46, is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Ulrigg, who died Sunday, was born in Missoula.

He graduated from Shadle Park High School and attended Highline Community College for two years.

Mr. Ulrigg was a smokejumper for the Forest Service and owned Gregg’s Discount Septic Service.

He was a 35-year Spokane resident.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Pamela Ulrigg; two daughters, Angie and Cammy Ulrigg, both of Spokane; his mother, Rhea Granberg of Spokane; his father and stepmother, Morris and JoAnn Ulrigg of Federal Way, Wash.; four brothers, Alan, Craig, Jon and Lance Ulrigg, all of Federal Way; three sisters, Gayle Peterson, Gwen Outen and Alena Sak, all of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Kenneth Beach Windsor, Calif.

Graveside service for Kenneth “Kenny” Beach, 20, a former Cusick, Wash., resident, will be at 10 a.m. today at Calispell Cemetery in Cusick. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Beach died June 27 in California, from a gunshot wound.

He was born in Missoula.

His family moved to the Cusick area when he was a child.

He moved to California in 1990 to live with his mother. He worked for a masonry company in California.

Survivors include his father, Oliver “Rocky” Beach of Cusick; his mother, Deborah Ann Withrow of California; a brother, Randy Beach of Cusick; two half-brothers, Russell and Michael; three half-sisters, Nicky, Suzzana and Helen; his grandfather and stepgrandmother, Paul and Barbara Withrow of Concrete, Wash.; and grandmothers, Gloria Scofield of Clear Lake, Calif., and Eleanor Beach of Berkeley, Calif.

Robert Dean Spokane

Visitation for Robert C. Dean, 83, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A 30-year Spokane resident, Mr. Dean died Monday.

He was born in Stapleton, Neb.

He worked as a house painter and was a volunteer at the Union Gospel Mission.

His wife, Mollie Dean, died in 1990.

He is survived by a son, Nathan Jenkins of Selah, Wash.; a daughter, Mildred Moore of France; a sister, Helen Rinehart of Spokane; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Arvid Granlund Spokane

Service for Arvid C. Granlund, 94, is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Troy, Idaho, Mr. Granlund died Tuesday.

He graduated from high school in Deary, Idaho, and went to work in St. Maries in the sawmills.

He moved to Spokane in 1930 and worked for Commercial Creamery, Union Iron Works and the city of Spokane. He retired in 1971 from the city as a route foreman for the refuse department after 25 years.

Mr. Granlund was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Eagles Lodge No. 2.

His wife of 44 years, Beulah Granlund, died in 1989.

He is survived by two sons, Clinton and Clarence Granlund, both of Spokane; two daughters, Ilene Granlund of Spokane and Vivian Wise of Bakersfield, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
