Strawberry Leaves St. Paul With Plans To Rejoin Yankees

Compiled From Wire Services

Darryl Strawberry, embracing his minor-league teammates and wishing them well after Wednesday night’s game, is set to return to the New York Yankees.

Despite their denial last week that they were interested, the Yankees are ready to sign Strawberry after cutting him loose following the 1995 season.

“To my understanding, the deal is imminent,” Marty Scott, Strawberry’s manager at St. Paul of the Northern League, said Wednesday night. “I know it really got hot and heavy between them Monday. They said they just had a few things to work out.”

The MSG Network, which televises Yankees games, reported the deal would done by the weekend.

Strawberry, 34, is an eight-time All-Star, but his career was derailed by cocaine, alcohol, tax and domestic troubles.

Former Cincinnati Reds slugger George Foster is prepared to sell his World Series rings and his National League most valuable player award at an auction Saturday.

Foster has put those items, his All-Star Game MVP award and other memorabilia up for telephone auction through Uniquities-Cool Stuff Inc.
