Vizquel Clubs 4 Hits As Tribe Keeps Lead

Omar Vizquel had four hits and scored four runs as the Cleveland Indians salvaged the last game of a four-game series by beating the visiting Chicago White Sox 6-1 on Sunday.

After dropping the first three games, the Indians averted a first-place tie with the White Sox and limped to the All-Star break with a two-game lead in the A.L. Central.

Chad Ogea (4-1) allowed five hits in 6-2/3 innings and struck out a season-high six in doing what Jack McDowell, Orel Hershiser and Charles Nagy couldn’t - beat Chicago.

Angels 9, Athletics 4

Oakland, Calif.

Chili Davis went 4 for 4 and drove in four runs as California beat Oakland to avoid a four-game sweep.

Garret Anderson also went 4 for 4 and Angels starter Shawn Boskie (9-3) pitched into the seventh as California’s losing streak ended at four games.

Tigers 9, Blue Jays 0

Detroit

Cecil Fielder hit a grand slam to end an 0-for-22 slump, and Felipe Lira pitched a six-hitter to lead Detroit to a win over Toronto.

Tony Clark also homered, and Mark Lewis hit a two-run double for Detroit, which won three in the four-game series with Toronto and has won four of its last five. The Blue Jays had beaten the Tigers 15-0 on Saturday.

Brewers 4, Yankees 1

New York

Ben McDonald showed Darryl Strawberry how much fun a comeback can be.

McDonald won his fifth consecutive decision, taking a shutout into the ninth as Milwaukee beat New York. McDonald (9-3), just 3-6 for Baltimore last year, is on his longest winning streak since starting the 1994 season 7-0 en route to a 14-7 record.

Strawberry made his 1996 major-league debut, going 0 for 4 for the Yankees.

Royals 8, Twins 2

Minneapolis

Tom Goodwin drove in a career-high four runs and Tim Belcher won his first game in more than a month as Kansas City beat Minnesota.

Goodwin doubled and tripled in four at-bats and scored twice as the Royals won consecutive road games for the first time since May 21-22 at Detroit.

Red Sox 7, Orioles 5

Baltimore

Mo Vaughn hit a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, his second home run of the game, as Boston rallied past Baltimore.

Vaughn, who snapped a 13-game homerless streak with a two-run shot in the first, has 26 home runs. The second was the second-longest in the five-year history of Camden Yards.

Clearing the bases

Strawberry’s return on Cap Day brought out a New York crowd of 35,242… . Julio Franco’s right hamstring is not torn, but Cleveland manager Mike Hargrove does not know when he will return. Franco aggravated the injury in Saturday’s game.

Detroit’s 4-2 record against Toronto with seven games remaining is its only winning mark against all foes… . Oakland outfielder Geronimo Berroa was in New York with his wife for the birth of their second child.

Kansas City’s Jose Offerman led off all four games of the weekend series against Minnesota with a base hit.

The total attendance of 189,344 for Boston at Baltimore was the largest for a four-game series in Orioles history.
