Helen Hazen Rymond Receives Starlighter Award

Helen Hazen Rymond was presented with the Starlighter Award by the Morning Star Boys Ranch for her work at the ranch for 24 years.

She has served on its board of directors since 1972 and was president from 1981 to 1983.

Delena Schurger, Hunters, Wash., received a $300 Bertha Finley Brisbois Memorial Scholarship from Eastern Washington University.

Schurger graduated as valedictorian from Columbia High School with a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average. She received the Masonic Outstanding Student Award and the local and state-level Most Valuable Student Award from the Elks Lodge, the Who’s Who Among American High School Students Award and the All-American Scholar Award.

She is the daughter of Gloria and Jay Schurger.

Samuel Smith, president of Washington State University, has been named one of the “50 Most Influential People in College Sports,” according to College Sport magazine. Smith, chairman of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Presidents Commission, was ranked 20th. He has been the president of WSU since 1985.

Emily Perez, a graduate of North Central High School, is one of 18 incoming freshman from Washington state to receive a full-tuition academic diversity scholarship to Central Washington University. Perez, the daughter of Linda Robinson, Spokane, plans to major in theater arts.

Jonathan Auld, a graduating senior from Greenacres, received departmental honors in biology at Lewis and Clark College’s recent honors convocation in Portland.

Jonathan Bailey and Alissa Schwin, both of Spokane and students of Central Washington University, received Meritorious Student Employee Awards during CWU’s awards ceremony.

Three Inland Northwest students received degrees from the University of Portland: Stephanie Hill, Michael Jordan and Benjamin Hofmeister.

James Singleton, Spokane, received a theology degree in biblical and historical studies from Boston University.

The University of Oregon announced that Spokane students received degrees: Jonathan Adams, Eden Albertus, Erin Dullanty, Margaret Hayes, Jeremy Ostrander, Lacey Phillabaum, Cathleen Rafferty, Scott Reid, Tricia Reisenauer, Kevin Roberts and Thomas Walsh.

Jeff Rinck, Spokane, was named Cornell College’s Male Freshman Athlete of the Year. He was also named Rookie of the Year for the Mount Vernon, Iowa’s college baseball team. Rinck, a pitcher and an outfielder, is a 1995 graduate of Mead High School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Rinck.

Amy Payne, Nine Mile Falls, graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, Lynchburg, Va. A graduate of Mead High School, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Payne.
