Barney’s Markets To Join Excell Chain

From Staff And Wire Reports

A trio of Barney’s Sooper Markets in the Valley and North Idaho next week will be renamed to join the Excell Food stores group, officials said Thursday.

The move will give Barney’s access to Excell’s 21-store cooperative advertising campaign and its purchasing power.

“Because of our tremendous buying power, we’ll be able to give customers better selection and better offers in every department,” said Ken Tuntland, president and co-owner of Barney’s.

Barney’s Valley store is located at 11205 E. Dishman-Mica Road. The Idaho stores are at Pinehurst in the Silver Valley and Orofino, east of Lewiston.

Barney’s on July 17 will be renamed Barney’s Excell Foods. Tuntland will continue to own the three stores.

Excell Foods is a Spokane-based purchasing and advertising group composed of nine independent business people who own 21 stores. The largest is Terry Sparrow of Spokane, with nine stores.
