Mcdonald Continues To Roll As Milwaukee Downs Blue Jays

Ben McDonald won his sixth straight decision and Pat Listach drove in a career-high four runs as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 12-5 on Friday night.

McDonald (10-3) allowed two runs and three hits over six innings in snapping a five-game losing streak to the Blue Jays, whom he hadn’t beaten since Aug. 12, 1992.

Listach, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list Thursday, Fernando Vina and Jeff Cirillo each drove in two runs in the second as the Brewers took a 6-1 lead.

Listach and Vina hit two-run doubles off Erik Hanson (8-11) and Cirillo added a two-run single. Listach’s two-run single in the fifth off Scott Brow made it 10-1.

White Sox 7, Royals 6

Kansas City, Mo.

Tony Phillips reached base five times and Kevin Tapani snapped a personal four-game losing streak to Kansas City, leading Chicago to a win.

Tapani (9-5), who hadn’t beaten the Royals in more than two years, struck out six and walked three and gave up five hits.

He was relieved with two on and one out in the seventh by Larry Thomas, who gave up an RBI double to Tom Goodwin and was immediately replaced by Matt Karchner.

Indians 7, Twins 5

Minneapolis

Pinch-hitter Brian Giles hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat of the season to tie the game in the ninth, and Jim Thome hit a two-run single to rally Cleveland past Minnesota.

Minnesota, playing hours after teammate Kirby Puckett announced his retirement, led 5-3 in the ninth before the Indians came back.

A steady rain washed out the Baltimore-New York contest.

The game never started and was postponed after a delay of 2 hours, 2 minutes. No makeup date was announced, although it will probably be part of a doubleheader today.

Red Sox 11, Tigers 3

Detroit

Mo Vaughn hit a grand slam and Reggie Jefferson had four RBIs as Boston won its third straight game.

Tom Gordon (7-4) gave up three runs and six hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings. The right-hander again received excellent run support. The Red Sox have averaged more than seven runs in Gordon’s 19 starts.

Rangers 8, Athletics 4 (10)

Oakland, Calif.

Damon Buford’s second RBI double of the game knocked in the go-ahead run as Texas scored five runs in the 10th inning to defeat Oakland.

Ripe offer for Strawberry

Darryl Strawberry will earn nearly $400,000 for playing with the New York Yankees this season, according to details of his contract obtained by The Associated Press.

Strawberry received a $260,000 signing bonus as part of his minor league contract with Columbus (Ohio) of the International League, and has a $300,000 salary with the Yankees. Strawberry could earn an additional $100,000 if he is named comeback player of the year.

Thomas a father again

Chicago first baseman Frank Thomas, who went on the disabled list Thursday for the first time in his career, became a father for the third time later that day when his wife gave birth to a girl.

Bolton to take center stage

Sunday’s game between Milwaukee and visiting Toronto has been pushed back two hours to 1:15 p.m. because of an exhibition softball game featuring pop singer Michael Bolton.
