Ewu Students Receive Awards At Commencement

Eastern Washington University students recently received Mary Shields Wilson Awards at commencement. This award is given for outstanding academic achievement and outstanding achievement in leadership or service to EWU or the community.

Alicia McIntire, Cheney, is the daughter of Gabriele and Allan McIntire. An urban and regional planning graduate, she is a 1992 graduate of Cheney High School, member of Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies, and has been on the dean’s list every quarter. She is a student member of the American Planning Association.

Raeshell Rozet, Fairchild Air Force Base, a developmental psychology graduate, is a member of the Psi Chi psychology honor society and has been accepted in the master’s program in counseling psychology at Gonzaga University.

Todd Schoenberger, Spokane, a nursing graduate, is the son of Shirley and Ronald Schoenberger, Liberty Lake. A 1981 graduate of North Central High School, he was president of the Associated Students at the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education. He also received the WSU President’s Award.

William Henry Banks III, Spokane, a social work graduate, is the son of Louise and Neil Schmitt, Las Vegas, Nev. A 1971 graduate of Ferris High School, he chaired the Undergraduate Social Work Organization in 1995 and works part time at the Indian Treatment Center. He is a Master of Social Work candidate for 1996-97, a Block Watch coordinator and member of the National Association of Social Workers.

Francine Boxer, Spokane, a liberal studies graduate, is a 1968 graduate of Shadle Park High School and the daughter of Erma Boxer, Spokane, and the late Frank Boxer. She serves as a volunteer with the Poor Clare Nuns Monastery, Ronald McDonald House, Spokane AIDS Network and Habitat for Humanity. She represents non-traditional students on the EWU Women’s Commission. She received an award from the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1991 for developing a comprehensive law library at the Geiger Corrections Center.

Ruth Zimmer, Spokane, earned a bachelor’s in communication studies while maintaining consistent membership on the EWU Dean’s List. She has been a teaching assistant at Spokane Community College and completed two internships. She also tutors elementary students in specialized and regular education and served in 1993-94 as a spokesperson for Habitat for Humanity.

Jill Verploegen, Spokane, earned a bachelor’s degree in education with emphasis on reading. She is a 1992 graduate of North Central High School and the daughter of Debbie and Hank Verploegen, Spokane, She has been a member of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and Baptist Student Ministries, is active with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, provides tutoring in the math lab at EWU and volunteers in various after-school programs in Spokane and Cheney.

Diana Sanger, Spokane, earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and liberal studies and is the daughter of June and Gordon Hagan, Spokane. She was consistently named to the Dean’s List and has been a student adviser and research assistant in the EWU Health Services program, a member of Beta Sigma and the Displaced Homemaker Advisory Board of the Spokane Institute for Extended Learning, and a program assistant to the Life Skills Women’s Program.

Perilee Howie, Spokane, earned a bachelor’s in business administration, has been active in Boy Scout activities, led a program teaching life skills to fifth- through eighth-grade students, and has been an organist in her church.

Mary Greenup, Veradale, earned a bachelor’s degree in English and is the daughter of Beatrice Marler, Veradale. She has been on the Dean’s List each quarter at EWU, a tutor at Crosswalk and Goodwill Industries, and has been on the National Dean’s List for four years. She is a member of the EWU Honors Program, Phi Kappa Phi national honor society and the student Washington Education Association and is an associate member of the American Association of University Women. She will enter graduate studies this fall at Eastern.

Tina Wilson, Spokane, earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. She is the daughter of Berneice Jones and James Jones, Spokane. She has been accepted into the Ph.D. program in biochemistry at Duke University this fall. She is vice president of the EWU Chapter of the American Chemical Society and a member of Phi Sigma biological honor society and the honor societies of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Eta Sigma.

April Strader, Spokane, is a recent graduate in sociology and journalism. She is a 1988 graduate of University High School and the daughter of Melanie White, Spokane. She has served as editor of the Easterner, been a member of Alpha Kappa Delta honor society, and has served as secretary/ treasurer of the Students of Sociology organization.

Cameren Craig, 12, of Nine Mile Falls, and Ryan Green, 15, of Spokane will represent northeastern Washington at the Soap Box Derby World Finals on Aug. 10 in Akron, Ohio.

At Spokane’s Soap Box Derby on June 22, Craig finished first in the stock car division. Zane Freeman, 10, Deer Park, placed second, and Cristina Padilla, 13, Spokane, took third.

Green won the super stock division, followed by Chris Young, 13, Spokane, in second and Annie Robinson, 13, Loon Lake, Wash., in third.

Kristi Blackwood, a 1988 graduate of Central Valley High School, was recently accepted into the graduate school of applied psychology at Eastern Washington University. She recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in developmental psychology from EWU and will begin graduate school in the fall. She is the daughter of Kathleen McGaugh, Spokane, and Steven McGaugh.
