Associated Press

American League

Darryl Strawberry got his first two hits of the season, a pair of two-run homers, and Dwight Gooden won his sixth straight decision as the New York Yankees completed a doubleheader sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with a 7-5 victory Saturday night in Baltimore.

In the first game, Joe Girardi singled home the tying run in the ninth inning and scored on Mariano Duncan’s double to give New York a 3-2 comeback win.

In the nightcap, Strawberry and Gooden, who played together on the New York Mets in the 1980s, teamed to give the Yankees their eighth win in nine games.

Baltimore’s Brady Anderson hit his major league-high 31st homer in the first game.

White Sox 3, Royals 1

Kansas City, Mo.

Alex Fernandez held Kansas City to four hits and Chris Snopek, replacing injured Frank Thomas, had a two-run triple, leading Chicago past the Royals.

Fernandez (9-5), rebounding from his worst start of the year, walked none and struck out five in raising his lifetime record in Kauffman Stadium to 6-0 with a 1.80 ERA.

The right-hander, who gave up six runs in 6-1/3 innings at Cleveland in his previous start, retired 10 straight batters in the middle innings. He set down 21 of the last 23 batters in his second complete game.

Snopek, a third baseman called up from Triple-A Nashville on Thursday when two-time MVP Thomas went on the disabled list, capped a three-run sixth inning with a triple into right field that eluded Johnny Damon by a couple of inches.

The major-league mark for doubles is 23 by the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs on July 12, 1931. In that game, the Cardinals set the big-league record with 13 doubles.

Mike Stanley hit a three-run homer and Jose Malave a pair of two-run singles for Boston, which has won the first three games of the four-game series in Detroit and is 8-1 against the Tigers this season.

The Red Sox matched their longest winning streak of the season.

Blue Jays 15, Brewers 7

Milwaukee

Robert Perez, who had just one home run in his first 163 major league at-bats, hit two of Toronto’s five homers in the Blue Jays’ romp.

Ed Sprague had a three-run homer, a two-run single and also a double for Toronto.

Both of Perez’s shots came off Scott Karl (8-5), who surrendered eight runs and nine hits in three-plus innings.
