Hong Kong Chooses Dolphin As Symbol

Compiled From Wire Services

The Chinese committee overseeing Hong Kong’s change of sovereignty has chosen the rare Chinese white dolphin as mascot for next year’s celebrations.

“The dolphin is clever, cute, kind, active and inoffensive. Exactly the character of Hong Kong,” committee member Raymond Wu was quoted as saying.

An artist will be employed to design a dolphin logo, the newspaper said Friday.

The committee has also backed plans to hold a fireworks display, a parade, a variety show and other festivities during the British colony’s handover to Chinese rule next year, said Ta Kung Pao, a Chinese-language daily backed by Beijing.
