Peel Over To Pateros For Apple Jamboree

It’s hardly apple season, but those who want to jump the gun on this fall fruit can head for Pateros, Wash., for an Apple Pie Jamboree July 19-21.

The jamboree really only includes two types of events: eating and sports. Eating includes pie and ice cream, barbecue dinner and plenty of food vendors.

Sports includes a fun run, 3-on-3 hoops and softball. In a decidedly non-food, non-athletic vein, there will be fireworks at 10 p.m. July 20. For a schedule: (509) 923-2346.

The big boats: The hydros will race around Lake Washington in Seattle Aug. 2-4 as the big event in the annual Seafair extravaganza.

Those who want to watch the early heats Aug. 2 from the beach can do so for free. The beach tickets for Saturday are $10, available at the gate, $16 for Sunday. Reserved bleacher seating at the start/finish line and the south turn of the race are $24 ($12 for kids) and are available at Ticketmaster outlets. Pit tickets are $5.

Free shuttle parking’s available at the Kingdome, just present your ticket.

Singing in the new year: Don’t delay if you’re interested in seeing the new year - that’s 1997 - rung in by the three big tenors - Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti.

The Three Tenors in Concert will be New Year’s Eve at B.C. Place in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Tickets are available from B.C. Ticketmaster (604) 280-4444 and are $650, $475, $380 (that’s apiece, but it is in Canadian funds). There’s also a $5.50 service charge per ticket and a handling fee of $2.75 per order.

A number of hotels in Vancouver are also offering package deals for the big night, among them The Sutton Place, which will help you secure opera tickets along with your lodging reservations. For information: (800) 961-7555.

Soaking under a forest canopy: Hot springs and hiking in Oregon’s old-growth forests seems a wonderful combination. And it is on this tour, but only if you’re female. An adventure getaway for women only is being offered by Merlyn’s Journeys Sept. 2-7.

Every day the hikers will soak in different hot springs and hike through a variety of forests. Campfires and home-cooked meals are the evening’s entertainment. The trip ends at Breitenbush Hot Springs, a healing retreat with hot pools and saunas.

The six-day adventure is $750; for information contact Merlyn’s Journeys, PO Box 277, Altaville, CA 95221; (800) 509-9330.
