Person Smoking In Bed Starts House Fire On South Hill

From Staff And Wire Reports

A person smoking in bed caused a fire early Saturday that burned the basement of a South Hill home.

The fire destroyed the basement and filled the rest of the home at 1906 W. 11th with smoke, firefighters said.

A smoke detector woke two people who were sleeping in the house about 12:50 a.m. One of them was burned while trying to drag a burning mattress from the basement, but refused treatment, firefighters said.

Both occupants spent the rest of the night at a motel.
