Crews Battle Wildfires In 5 Western States

Compiled From Wire Services

Fire crews on Sunday battled blazes covering more than 16,000 acres in five western states.

More than 4,500 firefighters had been dispatched to California, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon and Utah, the National Interagency Fire Center said.

A lightning-sparked wildfire that consumed more than 1,800 acres of brush in Piru Gorge in Southern California was 25 percent contained Sunday.

But extremely rough terrain hampered the more than 800 firefighters who fought the blaze straddling the Los Padres and Angeles National Forests.

Elsewhere:

A 4,000-acre fire in western Colorado’s Dinosaur National Park threatened a lookout tower and several structures.

A fire in southern Idaho had burned 2,400 acres of grass and sage by Sunday.

In central Utah, several hundred firefighters were battling one large blaze and three smaller fires that covered 7,300 acres.

A fire in central Oregon had burned 1,100 acres by Sunday.
