Formaldehyde Spill From Train Contained
Five cars of a Central Oregon Pacific Railroad freight car derailed Saturday morning in the Siskiyou Mountains, spilling about 700 gallons of highly flammable formaldehyde.
By late afternoon, state and railroad officials said the chemical had been contained, and they did not believe it had contaminated a nearby fork of Cottonwood Creek.
A team from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency office in Seattle were to arrive by nightfall.
George LaValley, the railroad’s general manager, did not know why the train derailed.
